Preparation for a first obstacle course is less about a perfect training plan and more about arriving capable, equipped and calm. This guide covers general readiness themes. It is not medical advice—check with a qualified professional if you have injuries or health concerns.

Build useful fitness, not specialty tricks

Most first courses reward:

  • Steady walking or easy running on mixed terrain
  • Ability to get up and down from the ground without panic
  • Basic pulling strength (rows, band pulls, or playground bars)
  • Core control for crawls and carries
  • Short bursts of effort with honest recovery

Two to four weeks of consistent movement usually helps more than one heroic gym week. Practice with the people you will be tethered to if your event uses a team format—communication matters as much as fitness.

If you are doing a tethered adult day

On Zulu Challenge Adult days, teams of two or more stay connected for about 5 km . Practice walking side-by-side, agreeing who leads on narrow sections, and pausing together before climbs. Solo registrants are paired with another solo athlete; still arrive ready to cooperate. See the Adults challenge page for the current format.

Gear that actually helps

  • Shoes with grip you have already worn outdoors
  • Clothes you can move and get dirty in; avoid cotton that stays heavy when wet
  • Optional gloves for rope and wall contact
  • Water according to the event’s carry or aid-station rules
  • Weather layer you can stash or wear at the start

For K9 entries, a harness and hands-free leash are required on Zulu Challenge courses; aggressive or protective dogs must be muzzled. Confirm gear on the K9 and FAQ pages.

Event week and morning

  1. Re-read your ticket email: start window, parking notes and what to bring.
  2. Eat a familiar meal; skip brand-new supplements on the day.
  3. Arrive early enough to check in without rushing your warm-up.
  4. Warm up with easy movement and a few practice crawls or step-ups—nothing maximal.
  5. Agree on a finish goal with your team: complete together, celebrate assistance, leave ego at the gate.
